Training

How to train your puppy for a reliable sit?

Nothing is cuter then to see any dog come towards people and sit politely waiting for their attention and praise. How do you get a puppy to sit reliably?

Anytime your puppy wants your attention, tell them to sit first. If you have more time then just wait for them to sit on their own and praise them for their behavior. The praise could be a variety of things that would be considered valuable in their eyes.

  1. When you want to walk your dog, pick up the leash and wait for the sit. As soon as they sit then you can tell your puppy in a calm voice they are wonderful and gently place the leash on them. If they start jumping around, barking or getting too excited then just drop the leash and walk away. Wait 30 seconds and try again.
  2. When you are going to give your puppy some extras treats from your dinner table. First, clear the table and place the scraps on the counter until you are done cleaning the kitchen. Then look at them and tell your puppy to sit. Place the scraps in their food bowl or ideally in one of their toys so they can take the time to work for their treasures and mentally challenge them as well.
  3. If your puppy wants to go outside then tell them to sit first then open the door.
  4. When your puppy wants to get your attention while you are sitting on the couch then as they approach you, tell them to sit. Once they are sitting then give your puppy all sorts of love & praise. If they jump on you then take your attention away and you might even have to get up and walk away. If they follow you, you can reward after 30 seconds or so by telling them they are wonderful because they followed you. Ask for the sit again and when they do then reward with lots of love.
  5. When you go to play with your puppy and they want the ball/Frisbee/toy then tell them to sit first then throw the toy.
  6. When you are going to give your doggie a treat anyways, make them sit first.
  7. When you are bringing them to an off leash play area then tell them to sit before letting them off leash to go play with the other dogs.
  8. When your puppy is in the backyard and has some extra energy then tell them to sit and then toss a handful of kibble so that they can find their treasures in the snow or grass.
  9. Anytime they want anything at all, tell them to sit first and then they get whatever it is that they want.

Today’s training challenge is to have your dog sit in 5 different situations before bedtime!

Linkables

Twist'n TreatThe Linkables are fantastic toys for all types of dogs especially for your doggie who loves a challenge. These toys are great as they mentally challenge your dog one step at a time. Just take their regular dog food that you would feed them for breakfast or dinner and place it in one of the Linkables. Feel free to add a few extra treats if you would like to make it even more motivating to get their dinner. Then place it on the floor. It is best if you just leave the toy on the floor and let them work on getting their food. So instead of feeding your dog their food in a bowl, try one of the Linkables to challenge your dog mentally. Once they master one of the Linkables then just add a link to make it harder.
