Update on Jemma

"We are so pleased with Jema, our new Medium Goldendoodle who was so beautifully trained by Marcia Scott, owner of Happy Hound. Jema is truly a delight and a welcomed addition into our lives. Jack Update Happy Hound

We were a long time contemplating the haunting task of starting over with a new puppy. Luckily, the opportunity to adopt a completely trained 4 month old arose, and we acted immediately. This adoption, orchestrated through a mutual friend was essentially seamless and effortless and we couldn't be happier with the outcome. We can't imagine our lives without this goofy, fun loving, well disciplined girl who is the apple of our eyes.

Initially, the thought of missing out on early puppy time and bonding was a wee bit concerning; however, we now feel our bond is perhaps stronger as we didn’t go through any of the early frustrations. We adore our Jema and are thankful that she was given such a professional and solid foundation and as a result, the pros have certainly outweighed any cons.

A heartfelt thank you Marcia, for your genuine friendship and guidance throughout this process and introducing us to our "Gem"."

Sincerely,
Carolyn, Steve & Danika

Success Stories

"It's hard to admit when you can't handle a problem, especially when the "problem" comes in the form of a much-longed-for puppy and you're veteran dog people. But, with Ruff's arrival, everything we ever knew about training a dog was challenged and we found ourselves at a place where if we didn't get help, we wouldn't have been able to keep him. That's where Marcia came into the picture. From our first phone call with her, we sensed hope that Ruff's poor behaviour could be changed and that life with him could get better. Marcia may never know just how much that hope meant to us at that point in time.

Marcia is passionate about dogs and has an amazing ability to command their respect. She is also a great listener and quite insightful. Not once did we feel judged by her for what we had attempted on our own. Instead, we were guided in a new direction and given the tools we needed to move forward. Marcia clearly understood our problems with Ruff once she began to observe his interaction with us, which is why her coming into our home was so beneficial to us. And she cared. About Ruff and about us. It is most reassuring to have Marcia's expertise and friendship as a constant resource for us. Like most of us, Ruff is still a work in progress. But, thanks to Marcia's commitment to us and our commitment to Ruff, we can already see the beautiful dog he will one day be."

Thanks for all your help.
Dennis, Leanne and Jack

Puppy Biting! Ouch!

Puppy season is beginning which means biting puppies!

Puppy biting is totally normal and a natural puppy behavior. They need to understand the power of their jaws. They need to learn bite inhibition which is the strength of their bite.

Take your puppy for a good 10-20 minute walk depending on how young they are. Therefore, when your puppy is little calmer then play with them a bit by scratching their belly and place your hand near their mouth. At the beginning, you are going to correct only the hard bites that hurt since you will naturally say “ouch”. The trick is to keep your hand there (easier said then done!) so that it doesn’t encourage them to grab and snap with their bites. If the puppy softens their bite then I would tell them “good puppy”. If the puppy gets energized from the “ouch” then your feedback to them might need to be a little stronger so that they back off and possibly even lick you to say “sorry about that”. Therefore, you can tell them they are good puppies when they soften their bite or back off completely.

If your puppy gets re-energized continually then I would suggest grabbing a toy which you can encourage them to use.

In a few days, you will be able to start correcting the medium bites followed by the softer bites in the same way. Then even mouthing. You want them to understand that placing their mouth on you in any way is totally unacceptable (we’re wimps as we can’t handle any pressure!)

This will always keep them safe and they will understand the power of their jaws.
