Training Tips - Tire Out Your Doggy

Since the weather has been freezing outside, it is harder to burn out your doggie during these cold days & nights. Some dogs will even revert back to peeing in the house. For the dogs who choose not to venture out in the yard to do their business then just take a step back with them. You go outside with them and as soon as they do their business then majorly reward with several good treats to reinforce the behavior. Tell them they are wonderful and run back into the warm house with them. They will begin to be very quick on doing their business outside.

As far as getting rid of their excess energy, there are several ideas that will help benefit them & you! Place their regular kibble inside a mentally challenging toy for their breakfast & dinner. Just place the toy on the floor and watch from a distance without saying anything at all. Let them figure out the puzzle on their own. If you push it around for them then they will wait for you to push it around for the kibble to fall out.  This will help to mentally tire out your dog!

The coolest thing is, if in a month down the road, you place the food bowl and the food toy down at the same time then most dogs will go for the food toy every time as it is fun to do and more mentally challenging.

Once they are mentally tired then they are less likely to find their own means of entertainment. For the more active canines, hide all of your dog’s dinner around the first level of your house then send your dog to find it. This is a great way to mentally challenge your dog and tire them out during the colder weather.
