Jumping Beans

I have had the privilege of meeting some of you recently at the various fundraising events such as Hopeful Hearts, Under My Wing Pug Rescue or the Ladies Carleton Heights tea party with Sharon Richardson, where I spoke about Jumping doggies. I truly enjoyed all events and as promised, here are some training tips for doggie owners who need some help with dogs who jump up.

In general, dogs jumping on people is certainly a common occurrence. A few suggestions to those who are not as keen about the four legged furry friends jumping up and displaying inappropriate behaviour:

  • As soon as you see the dog coming your way, whether it is on a bike path, from their driveway, or you are entering through their front door, the best way to have them greet you properly is for you to not Touch, Talk or even give Eye contact to the dog. The dog will give you a sniff to understand your DNA and when you don’t give them any attention they will be on their way.
  • If the dog is more of the “pushy type” then I would suggest to move your body into their space and take over the area where they are claiming. This works especially well in doorways when they are jumping and being overly excited.
  • The quickest way to avoid the jumping of a very social animal is by letting them give you a sniff and completely ignore them. Once they are calmer certainly give them lots of praise. If you can get a sit after they are calm then you just earned extra bonus points!

Today’s challenge: have your dog sit in 5 different situations before bedtime!

  • Pet Friendly Weed Eliminators

A “little birdie” told me that one of the ways to get rid of weeds in a doggie friendly manner is to use boiling water. Just remember that wherever you place boiling water there will be no weeds or any other plants. This would include grass or plants that you would like to keep! Other pet friendly weed eliminators which can be used separately are vinegar, salt, sugar and cornmeal. I tried the boiling water and it worked!
