Training Tips - Greeting People |
I was working with one of my clients and we were teaching their dog to greet people in a polite manner. We would like to first start working your dog on the “Off” command. Then we will add in “Sit”. Therefore, your dog will learn 'off' the person and actually give them a command to sit to greet people.
Nothing is sweeter then to see any dog come towards someone and sit politely waiting for their attention and praise.
We would want to start by having your dog understand what “Off” means so that they understand the command and to set them up so that they are successful in learning.
Therefore, I would like to suggest placing a treat in your hand with your palm up, keeping your hand still and wait for your dog to back off in some manner on their own. As soon as they move away from your hand (even for a slight second) then reward them with the treat and say “Take it”. Continue to wait for the behavior to happen with each treat in a closed hand and wait for them to turn away. As soon as they are turning away on their own then you can add in the word “Off” as you place your hand with your palm up with the treat in it. As soon as they back off and don’t touch your hand then reward with the “Take it” command. They will soon learn that the only way to get the treat is to wait patiently and they will be rewarded for this behavior. Once your dog understands that “Off” means to not contact with the object then we can transfer this learned behavior to people. Therefore, you can tell your dog “Off” and “Sit”.
Master your “Sit” command and you will have accomplished so much! Anytime your dog wants your attention, then tell them to “Sit” first. If you have more time then just wait for them to “Sit” on their own and praise them for their behavior. The praise could be a variety of things that would be considered valuable in their eyes. If you have any questions at all on these training tips then please send me an email at Marcia@happyhound.ca or give me a call 613-253-5535 and I will walk you through the process to help with your success.

Skunk Recipe |
If your dog has been sprayed by a skunk then the best way to get rid of the smell would be to not give them a bath right away! I used this recipe this morning on one of my dogs and it worked so well. Just mix together:
4 cups of hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 teaspoon of liquid soap or dishwashing soap
Mix your 4 cups of hydrogen peroxide in a bowl or bucket with 1/4 cup of baking soda. This will start bubbling and add 1 teaspoon of liquid soap or dishwashing soap. Wet the dog thoroughly with the mixture, sponging carefully around the face. Most dogs' faces will be badly skunked, so you really want to wet the face, but don't get it in their eyes or nose, because it stings.
After the dog is thoroughly wet with the mixture and every trace of the scent is gone then rinse the dog with water and give them a bath with shampoo and conditioner. Give them lots of praise and tell them they are beautiful! |
