Barking

Prevention:
Barking is always a secondary cause for their behavior. The primary cause is they are bored. In order to address the boredom you need to physically and more importantly mentally challenge their mind. To challenge the mind you will require toys/bones/puzzles in order for them to find/work for their food. If you are interested in a Happy Hound recommended toy sheet please email me at marciascott@sympatico.ca

Correction:
In order to stop barking as it happens then walk quickly to them and give a calm assertive correction such as teaching shush, using water or touch them to set them off balance and walk away. The key is when they are not barking then give them attention with praise, talk to them or give them a stuffed bone or interactive challenging toy.

Distraction:
The third element to stop the barking is to give them something else to do. An example would be a down stay in the kitchen with a stuffed bone or new interactive toy while I cook dinner. Or they can have their dinner in an interactive toy while I take care of things in the house. Make them work for their dinner as they also need a job to do which will keep them calmer and they are mentally challenged.

Linkables

Linkables are wonderful toys as they are mentally challenging and you are able to increase the level of the challenge by just adding another link! You can take their regular dog food that you would feed them for breakfast or dinner and place it in the Orb linkable. You can add a few extra treats if you would like to make it even more motivating to get their dinner. Then place it on the floor. It is best if you just leave the linkable there and let them work to get their food. So instead of feeding your dog their food in a bowl, try one of these linkables to challenge your dog mentally.
