Leave it!

As the snow has melted, our dogs are finding little treasures on the ground. These little items can possibly make your dog sick should they choose to eat them. There are leftovers from a variety of places that we don’t even want to know.

To help your dog not pick up these pieces of garbage, I would like to walk you through how to teach your dog the “Leave it” command so they stay healthy and happy.

  • Firstly, you would start this training inside without the garbage distraction.

  • Place your dog on leash and toss an item on the floor.

  • Quickly walk by the item and encourage them to look at you. Tell them “yes” and reward their behavior.

  • If they give the item a quick sniff on the way then tell them "Leave it" and continue on walking.

  • Once your dog walks right by the item with a quick sniff then you are ready for the real world outside.

Dogs need to sniff things along their walk to mentally tire themselves out as this is like reading a newspaper along their walk. The mental stimulation is good for your dog. However, when you come across something that you don’t want them to sniff/pick up/eat then tell them “Leave it” and keep walking.

Try this with a piece of garbage along your walk that won’t hurt them and reward with praise or treat when they listen to you. Then start increasing the distraction to more valuable items which they would normally pick up along your walk. When they give the item a quick sniff and continue with you, please give them lots of praise! Happy Walking!

The Kong Wobbler

The Kong Wobbler is an amazing toy for all dogs. Use their regular dog kibble which you would feed them for breakfast or dinner and place it in the Kong Wobbler.

You can add a few extra treats in the Wobbler if you would like to make it even more motivating to get their dinner. Then place it on the floor. It is best if you just leave the toy there so they don’t learn to wait for someone to move it for them. It is really fun to watch them figure it out!

So instead of feeding your dog their food in a bowl, try the Kong Wobbler to challenge your dog mentally and watch them work for their food to mentally tire them out.

Dog Facts & A Free Evaluation!

Dog Facts:

  • Dogs only sweat from their paws, and they pant to cool themselves!

As the temperatures outside are getting warmer quickly, dogs are prone to overheat. Please ensure your dogs have access to plenty of water for them to drink along with access to shady areas. If you are limiting their water due to housetraining issues, please consider reading Newsletter #4 on housetraining your dog. All dogs should have plenty of fresh water especially as the weather gets warmer. Consider walking your dogs in the morning or early evenings when it is a little cooler for them.
