Training Tips - Doggie Addition to your Family

Clients ask me how to introduce a new addition to their family and I wanted to pass along some tips that might help. These are the 6 Essential Steps for when you add a new addition to your family. This will help your new four-legged family member to make the transition smoothly and easy for you too!

6 Simple Steps to Start Off on the Right Track with your new Doggie addition!

Step #1: 30 minute outside adventure

Take them outside and around your house or neighbourhood for 30 minute. Let them sniff out the backyard, frontyard and around the house to familiarize them to their new surroundings

Step #2: Off leash in house

Walk your new doggie off leash inside the house and have them follow you from room to room. This will help them check out their new surroundings in a supervised manner.

Step #3: Beside your feet

Give them some fresh water, a little food then sit down on the couch with your new doggie beside your feet for a good scratch. This creates the bond and helps them to settle down nicely beside you rather than on top of you!

Step #4: Choose where they will sleep

Decide on where you want your doggie to sleep. My suggestion would be to allow them to sleep in their bed or crate in your bedroom. Therefore, you know if they need to get up in the middle of the night for a quick pee before returning back to bed. I would give them a good off leash walk or run around the outside of the house a few times before bed.

Step #5: What to do next?

During the week, just take time to bond with your new addition and have them follow you around. Also, give them short periods of alone time in their crate or exercise pen with a good chew toy or stuffed bone. They also need to start learning how to be on their own.

Step #6: Start housetraining

Choose an area where you would like them to eliminate and take them to that area on leash every couple of hours. Begin rewarding each and every time that they eliminate to reinforce where you would like them to do their business.

Enjoy your new lifetime companion!
