Training Tips - New Puppy |

SPRING IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER… And with that, a lot of people are thinking ‘now would be a good time to get a puppy’. Getting your puppy off to a good start provides a solid foundation for a great companion for years to come. Here are few tips after you get your new puppy home.
SOCIALIZE your puppy to EVERYTHING. The best time to socialize a puppy is between 8 and 16 weeks old and in that timeframe the optimum results will be between 8 and 12 weeks. Take your puppy everywhere with you. The more you involve your puppy with various experiences in a positive way, the more your puppy and eventually doggie will be able to adapt to any situation, calmly, happy and with confidence.

HOUSE TRAINING should start immediately after you get them home. Have a designated spot where you would like them to ‘go’. Lead them out on leash for the first little bit, so they get used to their spot. Use a command like ‘go pee’. As soon as they eliminate then just smile and wait for them to finish, then reward with several yummy treats and lots of praise. Remember that a young puppy has a little bladder and should be taken out for their potty breaks often. A guideline would be, immediately after they wake up, have eaten or have been playing for a while then take them outside. If there is an accident in the house then place them in another room or area and quietly clean it up without making a big deal about it. Signs to watch for when your puppy has to go will be sniffing, circling or whining. If you see your puppy doing these behaviors, take them out immediately and remember to praise them when they are done!
CRATE TRAINING is helpful for a new puppy. It provides them with a safe, warm environment for sleeping, down time, and when you are unable to watch your puppy for a period of time. In the beginning, give your puppy a yummy treat that will last for a minimum of 15 minutes such us a Bullwrinkle stick or white bone stuffed with his/her favorite kibble mixed with canned food or a hamburger/rice mixture. This will keep your puppy busy for the first little bit until they go to sleep. This will also make it enjoyable for them so they will eventually want to go in their dens; as they know that is where the special treats are and it usually becomes their ‘safe haven’ from the world. When letting your puppy out of the den, try to do it when he is quiet, but awake (not when he is barking or whining). Pay little attention to them when you open the crate door, and lead him/her immediately outside. When they are done his/her business, you can reward them and then they can play or you can have a snuggle with them. This will help to deter any barking or whining to get out of the den.
