Puppy Vet Visits
Taking your puppy or dog to the vet can be a positive experience if the situation is handled in a positive way. Most puppies will already have been to the vet to receive their first vaccinations and for their physical examination. We can start a good relationship with your vet by using a few tips to make this experience a good one.
- Take your puppy/dog for a 20-30 minute walk prior to going to the vet office.
- If your puppy/dog uses their crate as a safe place then you can bring them in the crate to the vet’s office.
- If the puppy/dog is not crate trained or is too large for a crate be sure to have them on leash. Even well trained dogs may become frightened and run, or may become aggressive with other animals in closed in areas.
- If you know that your dog is aggressive towards other pets leave them in the car, notify the staff that you are there, and then wait to bring the dog in until the vet is ready.
- If you are worried about your new puppy with worms which is very common, just bring in a stool sample and they will be able to test the sample for any problems and place your puppy on medication right away.
- Stay with your dog in the examination room to pet and talk to the puppy/dog in happy tones.
- Bring a few treats and let the vet give the treats to the puppy/dog. Most vets will have their own "healthy" dog snacks and this is a great way for the puppy/dog to enjoy a trip to the vet.
- Practice the “Sit Stay” before you arrive at the vet office so that you can lure them over to the scale and weigh your puppy/dog.
- Practice touching your dog all over so they are conditioned to being touched just as the vet would. Therefore, touch their ears, give a treat, open their mouth then give a treat. Do this exercise all over their body so they get used to being touched by you and others so that it is an enjoyable experience.
Today’s training challenge is to have your dog sit with your back turned in 5 different situations before bedtime!

Kong Wobbler
This is a fantastic toy for all types of dogs especially your doggie who loves a challenge. This is a great toy which mentally challenges them. Just take their regular dog food that you would feed them for breakfast or dinner and place it in the Kong Wobbler. Feel free to add a few extra treats if you would like to make it even more motivating to get their dinner. Then place it on the floor. It is best if you just leave the Wobble on the floor and let them work on getting their food. Instead of feeding your dog their food in a bowl, try the Kong Wobbler to challenge your dog mentally. |
