Training Tips - Teach Your Dog To Walk Nicely

I was recently working with a client who has a dog that pulls like crazy. Below are a few suggestions that might be helpful when you are walking your dog:

  1. Start with a 6’ leash.
  2. Begin in the driveway and walk in a large circle turning left into your dog to get their attention. Therefore, they can only concentrate on you rather than all the outside distractions such as cats, dogs, squirrels, etc.
  3. Be very strict with them when you venture out of your driveway. I just use the command “Let’s go”. If you dog is pulling ahead then turn around and go the other way. If they are pulling right then go left, if they are pulling left, then go right.
  4. Another training tip is to add in the “Watch” command which will help you in distracting areas. This is simply getting them to look at you rather than the distraction.
  5. f you are still struggling then try an Easy Walk Harness which fits very snug to ensure that there is no chaffing under their front legs. If you get any chaffing at all then tighten up the harness to ensure that it is not moving and/or add a sock by cutting one end to slide over the belly strap to protect the short haired doggies.
  6. Always tell your dog that they are wonderful when they are walking beside you nicely, to encourage the behavior to continue.
  7. Another option during your walk is to play the Red light, Green Light game.  Therefore, if your doggie is pulling then stop until the leash becomes loose then immediately say “Let’s go” to continue.  If they pull again then just stop and wait it out until the leash is loose. This will tell them that the walk continues when they have the leash loose.

If you have any questions at all on these training tips please send me an email at Marcia@happyhound.ca, or give me a call 613-253-5535 and I will walk you through the process to help with your success.

Things are going great with Frankie!
The tips and suggestions that you gave me are working like a charm!

Frankie Happy Hound

She is a different dog on our walks and I have been able to call her back off leash from other dogs and people successfully!

I carry the little squeaker toy and I now turn my back and kneel down when calling her back to me.

She is doing so well and I cannot thank you enough for helping us!

Take care,
Catherine

Dogs Do What Works

If your dog demands your attention by barking or whining then turn your back to them and walk away for 30 seconds. This will stop the annoying behavior. Try it for 1 week and let me know the difference.
