Training Tips - Leash Biting

A friend of mine whom I met at a business conference in Atlanta has the cutest dog whose face would make your heart melt and is such a sweetheart. Yet they were completely embarrassed to walk him as he would always bite on his leash. This is a very common behavior and the best way to fix this would be to:

  1. stop walking as soon as they touch the leash with their mouth
  2. you can stand on the leash and quickly pull the leash tighter under your foot and wait for them to stop biting the leash.
  3. As soon as they stop biting it then the walk continues which is the real reward.
  4. If they are a puppy then I would just ignore them carrying the leash in their mouths unless they start a “tug of war” game.
  5. If they begin the “tug of war” game with the leash then just quickly place the leash under your foot (easier said then done!) and wait until they are finished.
  6. In the meantime, I would like to suggest that you teach your dog the “Off” command so that when they touch the leash with their mouth then you can use the “Off” command to stop the behavior.
  7. Remember dogs do what works to get your attention so if it is not fun to bite the leash then they will not continue that behaviour.

"I have to give you some feedback right away. After our training session together, I was amazed at the difference in our dogs. By letting our dogs Chloe and Maple play together with supervision has made Maple a happy dog and much more active. I swear she is smiling!

Graham said: "Who'd a thought that after having so many dogs in our lives we'd have so much more to learn about the basics!" He's right! Carolyn said that you must have switched the dog! It couldn't have been Chloe!

Using the Kong Wobbler for dinner and breakfast was great. Chloe is almost tired after eating and she isn't jumping and bugging us while we eat. Thank you for your help!

Elk Antlers Happy HoundCanadian Elk Antlers! Long-lasting healthy dog chew. There are a variety of shapes and sizes to suit every dog, yet the best elk antler to start with would be the ones split in half so that they can easily get to the center part.

Elk antlers are 100% Canadian and naturally shed. The ultimate in healthy and long-lasting treats!

Antlers provide more than just recreational chewing - they're a great source of calcium, protein, glucosamine, chondroitin (great for the joints) and many other vitamins & minerals.

• Great for tough chewers. Elk Antlers provide hours of recreational fun, for even the most aggressive chewers and last longer than any other chew on the market!
• No odours, no slime and no stains - a tasty, mess-free treat for your dogs.
• Harder than bones - antlers do not easily break, chip or splinter.
• No fat - can be enjoyed by dogs that are overweight, have pancreatitis, IBD or allergies to ingredients found in other treats.

Elk antlers, compared to other antler varieties, have up to 30% more marrow in the core, and the marrow is what makes it such an attractive chew for even fussy dogs!
